EARRING INTERESTING FACT:

Pierced ears were popular in the United States through the early 1920s, then fell into disfavor among women due to the rising popularity of clip-on earrings. Nevertheless, a small male following continued to exist, particularly among sailors for whom a pierced earlobe often meant that the wearer had sailed around the world or had crossed the equator. In addition, if a non-service member sailor was involved in and survived a sinking ship, they were often seen wearing an earring in the left ear. There was also a long-held belief that puncturing the earlobe was beneficial to increasing the acuity of eyesite or of hearing. Also, it was a common belief amongst sailors that if their ship wrecked and their bodes washed up on a shoreline, the person to find them would take the earring as payment for a Christian burial. It is because of this belief that many sailors invested quite a bit of money on gold earrings, as they were very superstitious. (Wikipedia 2008)

Bracelet Interesting Fact:

Originally made of found objects such as wood, stone, bones and plant materials, bracelets have come a long way in both material and design. Many historic bracelets were created to serve religious as well as decorative purposes.

In Greek culture, the bracelets were worn by both sexes for fashion and function. The women would adorn their arms above and below the elbow with wrappings of gold or silver. Often these bracelets would be detailed with animals such as lions or snakes. The men would wear metal or thick leather cuffs along the forearms to protect against blows during battles. These leather or metal bracelets on men were also popular for ceremonial dress as well. In Africa many jewelry peices were made from bronze casting, including wide bracelets that are worn by women in Nigeria. These bracelets are worn to entice young men, limit movement of walking, affording them a handsome wiggle. They are made of thin plait brass, are very wide and are not removed for many years.

Necklace Interesting Fact:

The necklace is a piece of jewelry that can be traced back throughout history as being worn by both men and women. They were often used as ways to make a distinction among many cultures.

Historians and archeologists have discovered that the necklace originated maybe forty thousand years before originally believed. In South Africa they have excavated a cave that had over 41 mollusks that were strung as possible neck jewelry nearly 75,000 years ago.

Earlier archeologist had believed the oldest known finding was from 30,000 B.C. It was made of stones, animal teeth and bones, claws and shells strung onto thread, similar to the concept of today's necklaces.

Later, in 2500 B.C., necklaces were being made from gold. These gold choker and adornments were discovered in Ur. Later Sumerian's began using beaded neck jewelry using examples of colored stones, copper and other metals.

The ancient Egyptians were more evolved. They grew from simple stringed bead necklaces to the more complicated patterns. They also had the broad collar and pectoral type necklaces that both men and women wore, especially the wealthy and royalty. Many of these necklaces were buried with them. These necklaces were often richly ornamented and were a big part of the dress attire.(EzineArticles.com)
